Use of standard size containers

Sea containers are designed according to standard dimensions and can be transported quickly and easily by land, sea or air for short and long distances. 40-foot and 20-foot sea containers are the most popular and most commonly used in the world. Each container of different dimensions has unique benefits.

Application in logistics

20-feet and 40-feet containers are commonly used in the business world and are chosen by companies to conveniently and safely ship larger volumes to other countries. The 20-foot container is smaller and more manoeuvrable, and carries almost every other product on the market.  The 40-foot container performs the same functions, but accommodates a larger volume of products because of its size.

In one aspect, however, they are different: the 20-feet container is designed to transport heavy but smaller products (sugar, metals, paper, cement, metal appliances), and manufacturers of 40-feet containers focus on customers who need a container for large products (cars, furniture, cotton, pipes). The transportation of such container is more difficult – 40-feet and larger containers are loaded first, with smaller containers placed on top.

Also, 20 and 40-feet containers are used as storage space both in business and personally.

Non-standard solutions for standard containers

Logistics and warehousing are not the only ways in which sea containers are used. 20 and 40-foot containers are often transformed into living spaces, offices, and other facilities. The 20-feet container is sized to accommodate up to 4 people comfortably. The container can be transformed into a space that accommodates the kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. So far it is not very popular in Lithuania, but in Scandinavia 20-foot containers often become summer houses.

40-feet containers are most popular in the business environment, both due to ability to transport large volumes of goods, and possibility of setting up an office, snack bar or even a filling-station. The size, durability and versatility of containers make them practical work spaces.

Advantages of a small container

The fact is that the market is not limited to 20 and 40-foot containers. The 10-foot container favoured by small businesses is small enough to be ideal when the vehicle have not enough space but requires a durable storage space. Smaller containers are manoeuvrable and easy to transport, as well as their size leads to lower transportation costs. 10-foot containers are used to transport and store goods – they are ideal for household items such as furniture.
